Auckland is the northernmost of what used to be called New Zealand's "four main centres".
Situated in a narrow section of the northern half of the North Island, with harbours on both east and west coasts, it is the largest city in New Zealand, with about one-third of the country's population. The name applies also to the much larger province, which covers nearly half of that island.
